South Africa Inaugural Global T20 League Postponed

The first edition of South Africa Global T20 league which was scheduled to take place from 3 November earlier, now will not take place this year.

This is the big blow to the South African Cricket Board. The delay in the settlement of broadcast deal and sponsorship for the tournament is the biggest reason for this postponed of the Global league.

Earlier South Africa Cricket Board removed its President Haroon Lorgat mainly because of not finalizing the various aspects of the Global league.

The tournament already attracted some controversy from the outset. It was plagued by low levels of transparency, secrecy about the amounts franchise owners paid for franchise licenses and obscurity about sponsors. Most importantly, complications arose around both local and international broadcast rights deals.

Earlier Cricket South Africa acting chief executive Thabang Moroe assured that tournament would go ahead as per the plan, “This league will be delivered,” he insisted. “We will start on November 3 as promised.”

Before the inauguration of the Global T20 league, 8 teams have been sold out and it was expected that tournament would definitely be hit as some of the franchise who owned the teams was known in league cricket including IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders owner and Bollywood Star Shahrukh Khan also owned a team named Capetown Knight Riders. Two franchise from Pakistan Super League, Javed Afridi and Fawad Rana, also owned teams in Global T20.

But now the tournament has been postponed and this will not help South Africa cricket and it also harms the prestige of Global T20 League.
