This was the last international appearance for veteran left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra and team India give a perfect farewell to his legend by winning the first T20 international of the series by 53 runs and lead the three-match series by 1-0.
On a batting friendly track in small Feroz Shah Kotla ground in New Delhi, New Zealand wins the toss and decided to field first. India making their combination a bowling friendly with 6 bowlers along with all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
Both Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Dhawan, gives India a very strong opening stand of 158 runs. This was the highest opening stand for India in T20 Internationals. Both Rohit and Shikhar score 80 runs each and could not convert their 80s into 100. Hardik Pandya was promoted to number three for some quick runs but he scores a zero and got out on the second ball he faced. At last, some quick work from captain Virat Kohli helps India to go past 200 runs mark in 20 overs.
India eventually scores 202 runs in their 20 overs. For New Zealand, it was only Ish Sodhi which had created some problems for Indian batsman and takes 2 wickets and gives only 25 runs in his 4 overs.
Chasing a target of 203 runs, New Zealand starts was not good. Martin Guptill out in the second over of the match. Munro also failed to score runs for New Zealand and bowled by Bhuvneshwar by a brilliant yorker. The pressure of big score results in regular wicket fall for New Zealand.
For India Chahal and Axar Patel takes 2 wickets each. Bhuvneshwar, Bumrah and Pandya each take 1 wicket. Shikhar Dhawan won the man of the match award for his brilliant 80.
This was the last match for Ashish Nehra. He bowled decently and missed two wickets in his final international appearance. This was also the first win for India against New Zealand in T20 Internationals. The second T20I of the series will be played on 4th November in Rajkot.
