Tim Paine inclusion is a little bit surprised as he made his test comeback after 7 years.
Paine recently made a half-century against England while captaining Cricket Australia XI. His average was just 29 in the first-class cricket. In international cricket, he just played four test with an average of 35. he lastly played his test match back in October 2010 against India.
Trevor Hohns, Australia’s chief selector, said Paine’s ability with the bat got him over the line.
“Tim was identified as an international player a long time ago and has always been renowned as a very good gloveman, also performing well for us whenever he has represented Australia in any format,” he said.
“His batting form in recent outings for the Cricket Australia XI and Tasmania has been good,” he said further.
In-form opener Cameron Bancroft also named in the 13 man squad for the first two test. In recent Shield match, he made a brilliant double century against South Australia. He is all set to make his debut in the first Ashes test in place of Renshaw.
“Shaun (Marsh) is playing very well at the moment, having scored consistently in the JLT One-Day Cup and first three rounds of the JLT Sheffield Shield competition,” he added further.
